01Find a comfortable starting distance
Begin with the standard lens character and leave some space around the person. Very close camera positions can exaggerate facial proportions. Move back and reframe if the face feels stretched; a color choice will not fix perspective.
02Choose film color by looking at skin
Try a few film colors while keeping the person and light in the same place. Look at the face and the brightest areas, not only the background. Pick a result that suits the person and the mood you both want.
03Change lens character second
Once you like the color, compare a different lens character. Watch the edges, background and bright points. Return to your starting choice often so you can tell what changed. Use stronger distortion deliberately when you want a playful portrait.
04Check the eyes in the saved image
Add softness or bloom carefully and inspect the saved photograph. The eyes should carry the expression you wanted to capture. Make one simple version and one with an effect, then compare them at the same viewing size.
