01Choose the light before the look
Start near a window or outdoors in open shade. Look for a scene with a bright area, a midtone and a shadow so you can see what a film color changes. Avoid judging a look from a single dark corner.
02Keep the scene still while you compare
In Rolens, choose a film color while holding the same composition. Compare skin, highlights and deep shadows. Then change the lens character separately. Changing one choice at a time makes it easier to find the combination you like.
03Give the texture room
Begin with restrained effects. Grain, bloom and light leaks can change the mood, but a face or a small detail should remain easy to read. Check the saved photograph as well as the live preview.
04Make a small series
Take three photographs with the same combination: a wide scene, a person or object, and one close detail. View them together. A look that works across the series is a useful starting point for your next walk.
Try it on your next walk.
